IPL 2023 sets multiple new records. Let us take a look at some of them.
1) In the game between Gujarat Titans and Sunrisers Hyderabad in Ahmedabad on May 15, fast bowlers claimed 17 wickets, conceding 214 runs at 12.58 runs per wicket and a 7.9 economy rate in 27 overs. This is an IPL record. Without taking a single wicket, the spinners bowled 13 overs, allowing 123 runs at an economy rate of 9.5.
2) Yuzvendra Chahal made history by being the first bowler to take 20 or more wickets in an IPL season five times with 21 wickets at an average of 18.66 runs each in thirteen matches this season. In 2015 (23), 2016, 2020 (21) and 2022 (27), he had already completed the feat. The honour has been won by Lasith Malinga four times: in 2011 (28), 2012 (22), 2013 (20), and 2015 (24).
3) The most of any bowler in this IPL, Mohammed Shami has taken 15 wickets (avg 15.86) in thirteen powerplay innings. Only two bowlers—Mitchell Johnson in 2013 with 16 wickets at 14.75 in 17 innings and Trent Boult in 2020 with 15.12 in 15 innings—have taken more powerplay wickets in an IPL season.
4) The lowest total by any side was 49 by Bangalore vs. Kolkata at Eden Gardens, Kolkata, on April 23, 2017, while Rajasthan’s (59) total was their second-lowest behind the 58 vs. RCB in Cape Town on April 18, 2009.
5) Rajasthan Royals (59) lost by 112 runs against Royal Challengers Bangalore (171/5) on March 14 in Jaipur, which was their largest run-based loss in the history of the IPL. It continues to be the lowest sum scored by any side in the IPL.
6) Royal Challengers Bangalore, the first side to do so in the IPL, has won four games by a score of 100 runs or more. At Bengaluru’s M.Chinnaswamy Stadium, they previously defeated the Gujarat Lions by 144 runs on May 14, 2016, the Punjab Kings by 138 runs on May 6, 2015, and the Pune Warriors by 130 runs on April 23, 2013.
7) Rinku Singh of Kolkata has been in excellent form during the third IPL, scoring 407 runs (averaging 50.87), including three fifty-plus scores, in thirteen innings at a strike rate of 143.30, the highest total by a batter from Kolkata. The average of any other KKR batter is below 35.
8) The only other players to manage 400+ runs while batting at number five or lower in an IPL season are Dinesh Karthik (2018), David Miller (2022), Kieron Pollard (2013), and Andre Russell (2019). Rinku is the only other player in this group.
9) In this IPL, Rinku struck the most sixes of any KKR batter with 25. The most by any batter in the current tournament; his total includes eighteen sixes when he is pursuing.
10) The most by a team in this IPL, Royal Challengers Bangalore, has taken 30 wickets thus far in the powerplay. In the IPL’s history, this is their greatest performance.
11) The RCB’s 9.4 overs during their 49-run innings against Kolkata at Eden Gardens in Kolkata on April 23, 2017, were the shortest all-out innings. Rajasthan Royals’ 10.3 overs when being dismissed for 59 was the second-shortest all-out innings.
12) Lokesh Rahul (105 innings), Chris Gayle (112 innings), and David Warner (114 innings) reached this milestone in the IPL more quickly than Faf du Plessis (121 innings). In the IPL, Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers are fifth and sixth quickest with 128 and 131 innings, respectively.
13) Faf du Plessis is the first player to reach 600 or more runs in the IPL 2023 after scoring 631 runs at an average of 57.36, including seven fifty-sixes, in twelve innings.
14) The most by any batter in this season of the IPL is Faf du Plessis, who has seven fifty-plus scores. The aforementioned feat, which surpasses the six in sixteen innings recorded in 2021, is also his best.
15) Mumbai Indians became the first team to accomplish the milestone in an IPL season with their sixth score of 200 or more in this competition. Four teams have amassed totals of 200 or more in a season: Chennai Super Kings (2018, 2022, and 2023), Punjab Kings (2014 and 2023), Kolkata Knight Riders (2019 and 2023), Royal Challengers Bangalore (2016 and 2023), and Rajasthan Royals.
